Abstract:
his invention relates to improvements in caster devices for use on various types of furniture and appliances and more particularly to ball caster devices incorporating low friction features.

It is conventional practice to provide furniture and the like with casters to facilitate moving such furniture over floors, etc., without having to contend with friction caused by sliding such conventional furniture across the floor and ensuing danger of scratching such floors. Such conventional casters have hitherto had the disadvantage that considerable friction is encountered in the caster itself due to the weight, of the article to be moved in conjunction with extra pressure bearing on the ball of a ball caster derived from pre-loading of a spring contained in ball casters of conventional retractable type.

The friction encountered between ball and spring, due to such pre-loading, is often too great to permit the ball in the caster to roll easily around as furniture is moved.

This problem becomes quite considerable upon .such casters being used in conjunction with heavy articles of furniture or appliances such as refrigerators, stoves and the like, a very heavy pre-loading of the spring on the ball of ball casters utilized in conjunction with such furniture or appliances normally being required in order to make the caster ball protrude in unloaded state for movement of the particular appliance, such heavy preloading providing excess friction that hitherto has prevented use of such retractable casters in conjunction with such heavy furniture or appliances.

4. Device for affixing chair legs or similar.
Patent Number:EP0402346
Publication Date:1993-09-29
Application Date:1990-05-22
Inventor:AMEISBICHLER RUDOLF (AT);ZOECHLING JOSEF (AT)
Applicant:AMEISBICHLER RUDOLF (AT);ZOECHLING JOSEF (AT)
Abstract:
A rolling device for attachment to a chair leg 11 or the like has only one ball 6 which is supported on the floor 13 and can be rotated by means of ball bearings 7 in a ball socket 9 which is downwardly open. So that the ball 6 can be locked when stressed, the ball socket 9 for the ball 6 of essentially non-deformable construction is connected to a slide 2 which can slide in the axial direction of the chair leg 11 and against which a spring 3 which acts in the direction of the floor 13 rests.

Patent Number:JP8011503
Publication Date:1996-01-16
Application Date:1994-06-30
Inventor:MATSUDA KEIICHIRO

Abstract:
PURPOSE:To provide a moving device which can attain easy appearance and retract of a ground contact element for transport by forming a ground contact element for transport and a lifting element which has an engagement groove for lifting passage in a cylindrical body mounted onto the bottom of a piece of furniture, and engaging an engagement part protruding with a lever pivoted to the upper end part of the cylindrical body. CONSTITUTION:A lifting element 3 provided with a ground contact element 6 for transport which has a spring 4 inside a cylindrical boy 2 fitted into a mounting hole 12 in a leg 21 and having a top end member 14 and has a spherical element 15 at its lower end part is supported so as to lift up and down.; The lifting element 3 is formed with a slit-shaped fitting-in space 11 and an engagement groove 7 which has rising and lowering passage 7a, 7b continuous in a loop shape. A spring 19 and an engagement roller 10 which engages with the engagement groove 7 are formed in a holding cylinder 18 at the lower end of a lever 9 oscillatably-supported inside a slit 16 in of the top end member 14 to form the lowering position locking means 5 of the lifting element 3. It is thus possible to protrude and transport the ground contact element 6 for transport by pulling up the bottom of a piece of furniture, and retreat the ground contact element 6 for transport by pulling up and lowering the furniture again in place, thus providing easy transport of the furniture.
